中国博客1.8亿，网络凝聚了势不可挡的人民力量。新书《

中国猛博》的编者翟明磊，走访17位中国知名博主，由20多岁的曾金燕到70岁的沙叶新，他们有的只是小学毕业，有的则是博士级人马，但同样以文字燃起千万网民的共鸣。

自从连岳成功发动网民阻止政府兴建「二甲笨」工厂，博客在中国正式代表了一种禁之不尽的言论力量。对拥有电脑的新一代来说，韩寒、李小乖、钱烈宪（取其音「前列线」）、长平、吴稼祥等点击率最高的博主都不会陌生。翟明磊说：「这本书只能在自由的香港出版，内地大部分人也是沉默的，但在编写这书时，却从这些博客身上，找到中国以言论政的变革希望。」

曾金燕：网上寻夫公开胡佳案

在言论被管制的中国，博客确实不易当。翟表示，书中17位博客都承担覑一定代价。以曾金燕为例，她丈夫胡佳06年因争取民权被公安带走，她随即在网上发动「寻夫」行动，令事件广泛流传，41天后当局在舆论下放人，令支持她的网民大受鼓舞。但公安局大半年后再次拘捕胡佳，更把刚产子的曾金燕软禁在家，后来有素未谋面的网民，不惜突破曾金燕屋外的公安防线，千里送来奶粉以示鼓励。

翟说：「昔有孟姜女哭长城，今有曾金燕网络寻夫……至少网络让胡佳案公诸於世，金燕也感到网民关心，不致因孤独而崩溃。」

连岳：博文推翻建化学厂

以写博文成网络英雄的，则要数连岳。他本是解答情感问题的作者，2006年时，厦门将兴建「二甲笨」工厂，他了解「二甲笨」对环境及人体有害，奋起在博文以无畏勇气及冷静头脑传递真相，他这样写：「首先，你不要怕，议论全国政协头号提案不是罪……转载国内合法发行报纸上的新闻也不是罪，你不会被抓的。如果还是害怕……不需要你有太勇敢的举动，只要让你身边的人都知道这件事，厦门之死你就没有责任了。」结果，博文激发万人抗议，令建厂计划搁置。

翟明磊说：「这些博客只能以自己可承受的风险去做这些事，当中肯定担惊受怕，但却是勇敢的，更激起民间团结的力量。」

该书的主编之一钱刚表示，虽然中国不断尝试打压网络自由，好像早前推出「绿坝」软件，但相信中国网民人数及技术将禁之不尽，他说：「博客肯定继续下去，这已成中国言论自由的发展趋势，相信任何管制措施也不能阻挡」。

有报道称伊朗博客作者死于狱中

奥米德·礼萨·米赛亚非（Omid Reza Misayafi）之前因“冒犯”政府和宗教权威而遭逮捕，于近日死在狱中。一个伊朗人权组织站点通过全球之声在线（Global Voices Online)做了报道，而我们是通过博客保护委员会（The Committee to Protect Bloggers）了解此事的。

死亡原因还不得而知，但是委员会称拷打博客的现象在伊朗很普遍，政府通常会以重罪将博客作者逮捕入狱。米赛亚非在去年12月份的时候被判30个月的监禁，罪名是“冒犯伊斯兰共和国领袖”。此人的博客是一个文化类的博客，并非政治博客，他只是写一点讽刺文章，没想到这给他带来这么大的麻烦。

今天晚上的更新指出，监狱糟糕的环境可能导致此人自杀了（link）。不管是直接的还是间接的，米赛亚非都是因自由言论，因使用网上社交媒体批评独裁政府而丢到性命的。全世界的社交媒体用户及其支持者都应关注这一事件。

我们已经报道过，在伊朗和埃及（link）有不少博客作者锒铛入狱，入狱的原因就是他们用博客记述政府的权力滥用，或者仅仅只是因为写了些批评政府的话，而导致这些容不得半点异见的政府痛下杀手。去年年中的时候，我们也报道过，伊朗议会曾讨论过对那些使用博客挑战政府权威的博客作者是否可以使用死刑，加以惩罚。（link ）

自由，艺术，自由表达与权威当局，自私利己以及权力滥用之间的战争永无停歇之日。网络的崛起开始让这一战争发生了变化。博客给之前的沉默者一个发声的渠道，而保护这些声音免于遭受逮捕，拷打和死亡恐惧的重要性绝没有夸大。

奥巴马在竞选的时候大量的使用了在线社交媒体，我们也很希望能看到奥巴马当局能公开，明确的谴责伊朗政府导致的这起死亡事件。如果这真的发生，我们还是会惊讶的。

中国网民成功挑战政府权威

据官方媒体新华社报导，中国有关部门上周五宣布，贵州瓮安县的四名党政及公安系统官员因在处理一桩据说被隐瞒的凶杀案时严重失职而被免职。

起初，警方宣称中学生李树芬是溺水而亡，这一鉴定结果引发了当地群众的不满，他们认为李树芬乃被奸杀，而凶手可能是当地高官的子女。就在上周三，贵州省委书记石宗源还将对这一事件的抗议活动定性为一起“被少数别有用心的人员煽动利用的事件”。据新华社称，约有3万人参与了此次抗议活动。

然而上周五宣布了相关官员的撤职决定后，据新华社报导，石宗源又称是地方官员在处理当地问题时所采取的粗暴方式引发了此次骚乱。

这一立场上的转变似乎是新闻记者和中国博客作者施压的直接结果，周曙光就是其中的一位。在他称之为“个人新闻台”的网站上，他将非官方报导以及从李树芬家人那里得到的照片和他们的请愿发布到网上，让瓮安事件走进人们的视线，得到公众关注。当中国主流网站开始删除与瓮安事件相关的贴子时，一些博主却利用网络技术展开了迂回，他们有的将自己的贴子从后往前倒着写，有的则重发在其他地方被删除的贴子。

有大量贴子在遭受审查前被公众所浏览，这使得公众期望政府能加大信息的透明度和对事件的回应。官方数据显示，中国目前拥有网民2.23亿人，数量几乎与美国的持平。

上周五政府态度的明显转变表明他们意识到通过老办法控制信息在如今是行不通的。在这之前，政府就曾试图在事态扩大之前进行说明：瓮安当地官员在骚乱发生不到两天后就召开了新闻发布会，就此事给出他们的解释。新华社也几乎是立即对骚乱进行了报导，这与以往在类似事件发生数日后才予以披露的做法形成了鲜明对比。

2007年3月，周曙光帮助报导了拆迁人群中的钉子户事件，他为此付出的不懈努力使他日后名声大噪。今年5月，他亲赴四川地震灾区，调查地震中大量校舍倒塌的原因，并收集了相关证据。

6 月30日，在一些网友的鼓励下，拿着网友出钱购买的机票（约190美元），周曙光又飞往贵州调查瓮安骚乱事件。到达当地的第二天，他不仅用相机拍下骚乱过后的场景，还从死者家庭那里收集了信息。他时常通过Twitter共享小段的信息，这种公共即时通讯工具可以在审查人员封锁前迅速发出信息。

Blogger wins right to free speech

A blogger who faced charges of intimidation in cyberspace has won a legal judgment that anti-censorship campaigners claimed this weekend will protect freedom of expression across the worldwide web.

Alan Murray's blog highlighting violence, vandalism and creeping sectarian division in a part of Belfast's university district landed him in court on Friday.

The 40-year-old was charged with three counts of intimidating a member of a local residents' committee, which included intimidation on the internet. The judge, however, found Murray not guilty on all counts at Belfast's Magistrates' Court. Index on Censorship - a global campaign group that defends free speech - welcomed the judge's ruling this weekend.

Murray's blog, www.holylandswarzone.blogspot.com, details allegations of violent drunkenness involving university students in what was once the most religiously integrated area of the city during the Troubles. The two-year-old blog also criticises university authorities, landlords and the local housing authority for allowing the Holy Land district, where all the streets have names from the Bible, to become a 'student ghetto' that has driven out residents who have lived there for decades. He also claims the area has become mono-religious, as most of the students come from Catholic areas of rural Northern Ireland.

Last year, however, a member of the local residents' association objected to Murray's blog and also made allegations against him, claiming he had given her a dirty look and made a verbal threat. Murray, a mature psychology student, has always denied any intimidation.

In an interview with The Observer this weekend, Murray said he felt 'totally vindicated' after Mr Justice McKillop threw out all three charges against him.

'During my testimony in court I said I was only trying to criticise those in power or those that would speak for us. That right has been upheld by the judge's decision. If the judge had ruled against me, then every blogger would have been vulnerable to charges of intimidation because those at the end of their criticism could claim they were being picked upon. A very bad precedent would have been set,' he said.

Murray said the ruling also established that bloggers had the same rights to freedom of expression as journalists. 'Bloggers don't have legal departments and large media organisations to back them up. They are vulnerable people and would have been even more open to censure if this case had gone the other way.'

He also revealed that he has reported the Police Service of Northern Ireland to the Police Ombudsman's office. Murray said he made a complaint to Northern Ireland's police watchdog over a number of officers' conduct in the case.

'I want the Ombudsman to find out why on earth police officers saw fit to prosecute me for expressing an opinion on the internet about where I lived. I also intend to sue the police over this entire waste of police time and resources, which took more than a year to reach this point,' Murray added.

Index on Censorship also criticised the PSNI's intervention in the debate between Murray and his opponents. Padraig Reidy, Index's news editor, described the PSNI's behaviour as 'patently absurd.'

Reidy compared the Belfast blogger's case to that of Channel 4's battle with the West Midlands Police over its Undercover Mosque programme. Channel 4 earlier this year won £100,000 from the police force and the Crown Prosecution Service for falsely accusing the production team of distorting television footage.

'The case of the Belfast blogger is as important as Undercover Mosque in terms of protecting the right to criticise and the freedom to inquire. The judgment in Belfast protects the blogosphere's freedom and it means the rich, powerful or any interest groups, whoever they are, can't bully bloggers using the law.

'As for the police in this case, they and the law should not be intervening in legitimate debate,' Reidy said.

Tarek sells and maintains PCs. He is described by his friends as shy and quiet, spending his time surfing the web and blogging.

On 7-7-2007, Tarek was asked by the security branch in Banyas to answer a few questions concerning a comment he left on one of the "sensitive" websites. That was the last his family heard from him.

Up to this moment, two Syrian human rights agencies did report on Tariq's detention.

HRW mentioned his name in its report on Syrian officials' continuous arrests of people over online comments:

"On June 30, 2007, Military Intelligence in the coastal city of Tartous arrested Tarek Biasi, 22, because he “went online and insulted security services,” according to a person familiar with the case. Biasi remains in incommunicado detention, his whereabouts unknown."

The HRW report says Tarek was detained on June 30, but the Syrian human rights agency and his family and friends confirmed that Tarek was detained on the 7th. of July and not on June 30th. I am noting this issue for documentation purposes.

Tariq does not stand alone in these arrests policy over online comments, the HRW report lists seven names among those who've been detained for expressing their views online. This policy started in 2002 but it has been increasing recently and especially after the “Ministry of Telecommunications and Technology” circular; Sami Ben Gharbia; GVA author, wrote about the repression of internet in Syria and here he uncovers the circular's instructions:

"Recently, the new-formed “Ministry of Telecommunications and Technology” issued a new circular asking the owners of the Syrian websites “to exercise accuracy and objectivity (…) and to post the name of the writer of an article and the one who comments on it in a clear and detailed manner.” The Ministry added that “the failure to do so would result in warning the website owner and rendering his website temporarily inaccessible. In case the violation is repeated, the website will become permanently inaccessible."

في صباح يوم السابع من تموز لعام 2007, طلبت السلطات الأمنية من طارق
بياسي (23 عاما) الذهاب إلى فرع أمن طرطوس للتحقيق معه حول تعليق نشره في أحد منتديات
الحوار العربية على الإنترنت. وإلى هذه اللحظة مازال طارق وراء القضبان بدون أية محاكمة.

طارق الذي يعاني من بعض أمراض الكبد مازال معتقلاً في فرع فلسطين بدمشق
ولا يسمح لذويه بزيارته أو معرفة أي شيء عنه ، رغم محاولاتهم المتعددة.

مضت أكثر من ستة أشهر على توقيف المدون السوري طارق بياسي من
قبل الأمن العسكري بدمشق، دون أن يحال إلى القضاء المختص لمحاكمته
والنظر في التهم الموجهة إليه إن كان ثمة تهم أصلاً. الأمر الذي يعتبر انتهاكاً
لنصوص الدستور وقواعده وحجزاً للحرية خلافاً للقانون.

طارق لم يخالف القانون وإنما كان يتصرف على أساس الحرية التي منحه إياها
الدستور في المادة 38 منه والتي تنص على أنه : لكل مواطن الحق في أن
يعرب عن رأيه بحرية وعلنية بالقول والكتابة وكافة وسائل التعبير الأخرى وأن
يسهم في الرقابة والنقد البناء بما يضمن سلامة البناء الوطني”.
طارق اعتقل بسبب تعليق كتبه على أحد المواقع الالكترونية، وأياً كان
مضمون هذا التعليق، فإنه لا يجوز أن يكون سبباً للاعتقال كل هذه الفترة
الطويلة وبدون محاكمة.

طارق عبر عن رأيه، ورأيه لا يهز الأمن ولا يزعزع الاستقرار ولا يثير
الفتن. فالأمن في سورية أقوى من أن يهزه رأي أو يزعزع استقراره مجرد
تعليق على الإنترنت .

طارق في ريعان الشباب و أول العمر ، يحب وطنه سوريا وشعبها ويعمل من
أجلهما، ومن يحب سوريا ا يستحق أن نرمي به في ظلام السجون لمجرد كلمة قالها ، ولمجرد رأي عبر
عنه .

أياً كانت التهمة التي اعتقل طارق على أساسها فإن من حقه أن يحاكم أمام
القضاء المختص للنظر في الأدلة التي تثبت هذه التهمة عليه وإعطائه
الفرصة إثبات براءته .

لذلك فإننا نطالب بتطبيق الدستور والقانون على طارق وإحالته إلى القضاء
المختص ليقول كلمته في التهمة المنسوبة إلى طارق . و الإفراج عنه فورا في
حال عدم ثبوت أي تهمة عليه . ومن الظلم أن يظل طارق دون محاكمة عادلة .

The Statement of the Syrian Bloggers to release the blogger Tariq Biasi

It is stated in the introduction of the Syrian Constitution: “The freedom of the country is only protected by free citizens”

Also the Article 28 in the constitution dictates that: “Every accused person is innocent until he is convicted by a final court judgement”

In the morning of the seventh day of July in 2007, the security authorities asked Tariq Biasi (23 years old) to go to the security branch of Tartus for some investigations concerning a comment he posted in an Arab discussion forum in the Internet. And up to this moment Tariq still behind bars without any trial.

Tariq, who is suffering from liver diseases, still detained in the Palestine Branch in Damascus and it is not permitted to his family to visit him or even know anything about him, despite their multiple attempts with the security authorities.

More than six months passed since the arrest of the Syrian blogger Tariq Biasi by the military security in Damascus without being referred to the relevant trial court to study the charges against him, if there were any in the first place. This may be considered a violation of the provisions of the Constitution and its rules. On the other hand, the suppression of the citizens’ freedom is also against the law.

Tariq’s act does not constitute a contravention of the law, he actually acted on the basis of freedom given to him by the Constitution since the Article 38 states that: "Every citizen has the right to express his opinion freely and openly, orally and written and in all other means of expression. He also has the right to contribute in the control process and in the constructive criticism to ensure the safety of national reconstruction".

Tariq was arrested because of a comment he posted in a web site, and regardless of the content of this comment, it may not be a cause for this long arrest and without a public trial.

Tariq expressed his opinion which would not shake the security nor destabilize the country nor become a sedition against the established order. As a matter of fact the security in Syria is stronger than being shaked by an opinion or a comment posted in the Internet.
Tariq is still young. He loves his country Syria and its people, and he is working for them. The one who loves Syria does not deserve to be thrown in the darkness of prisons for just a spoken word, or merely for an expressed point of view.

Whatever the charge that Tariq was arrested for, he has the right to be tried before the relevant court to consider the evidences that prove this charge and to be given the opportunity to prove his innocence.

Therefore, we call upon the application of the Constitution and law by the transmission of Tariq to the relevant court to study the charges attributed to him. And once the court admits the absence of evidence of any charge we demand that they release him immediately.

It is unfair to let Tariq stay more than that in prison without a fair trial!

Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association firmly condemn the arrest of blogger and writer Nay Myo Latt yesterday at his home in the Rangoon district of Thingankyun.

“This hounding of bloggers is unacceptable,” the two organisations said. “We do not know where Nay Bone Latt is being held. We urge the authorities to release him and to stop this persecution.”

A member of the outlawed National League for Democracy, Nay Myo Latt uses his blog (http://www.nayphonelatt.net/) to record the difficulties encountered by young Burmese when trying to express themselves, especially since last autumn’s protests against the military regime that were led by Buddhist monks. He also owns three Internet Cafés in Burma and one of them is located in Thingankyun.

Those arrested during the protests included blogger Thar Phyu (www.mogokemedia.blogspot.com), who was held for several hours just for posting photos of monks and demonstrators in the streets. His website has been closed.

The Burmese authorities have stepped up their surveillance of the Internet since the start of January, reportedly pressuring Internet café owners to register the personal details (name, address and so on) of all users and to programme (and save) screen captures every five minutes on each computer. All this data is apparently then sent to the communication ministry.

The Burmese exile news agency Mizzima quoted one Internet café owner as saying: “No one wants to submit to these measures but those who are most scared definitely will have complied.”

The only blog platform that until recently had still been accessible within Burma, the Google-owned Blogger (http://www.blogger.com), has been censured by the regime since 23 January. Bloggers are no longer able to post entries unless they use proxies are other ways to circumvent censorship.

“This blockage is one of the ways used by the government to reduce Burmese citizens to silence,” Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association said. “They can no long post blog entries or disseminate information. Burma is in danger of being cut off from the rest of the world again.”

When contacted by Mizzima reporters, local officials had no explanation for Blogger’s inaccessibility, saying they had received no orders on the subject. Local bloggers say the authorities also leave comments on blogs to dissuade other Internet users from reading them, or sometimes redirect them to other sites. Visitors to Niknayman (http://niknayman.blogspot.com/), one of the most popular sites last autumn, were redirected to a porn site.

Burmese authorities have arrested one of the country’s best known bloggers, the owner of three Internet cafes in Rangoon, according to sources in the former capital.

The arrested blogger was identified as Nay Myo Latt by a source who knows him well. The source said Nay Myo Latt, also known as Nay Phone Latt, was arrested at his home in Rangoon’s Thingangyun Township of Rangoon.

Nay Myo Latt, a youth member of the opposition National League for Democracy, owns the Explorer Internet café in Rangoon’s Papedan Township, the Heaven Internet café in Thingangyun Township and a third in the same suburb.

An NLD youth member who is a friend of Nay Myo Latt said the arrested blogger had been under observation by the authorities since returning from a stay in Singapore one year ago.

On his Website, www.nayphonelatt.blogspot.com, Nay Myo Latt says he is interested in art and music. But his friend said he was probably arrested because of political content on the site.

Burmese authorities have become increasingly nervous about the activities of the country’s many Internet bloggers since the September 2007 demonstrations, when blog sites were a major source of information about the protests and the regime’s brutal crackdown.

The first blog site to carry pictures of the demonstrations, http://moezack.blogspot.com, was closed down, and a blogger in Mogok Township, central Burma, was warned about the content on his site, www.mogokmedia.blogspot.com.

The authorities have tried to break contacts between Burmese bloggers and the outside world by blocking the Web site www.blogger.com and by slowing down Internet transmission speeds.

Sabotage is another regime method to disrupt bloggers’ activities. The Niknayman blog site was infiltrated by saboteurs who added insults and pornographic material to its content.

Apprehensive of the relentless crackdown by the Burmese military junta, several Burmese bloggers in Rangoon have gone into hiding. The scare follows the arrest of a Burmese blogger, Nay Phone Latt, earlier in the day.

Burmese bloggers in the former capital are alarmed and have been forced to go underground in fear of the authorities taking action against them. Nay Phone Latt (Nay Bone Latt), a blogger as well as a writer, was arrested from an internet cafe in Thingan Kyun Township.

A blogger, who requested anonymity in fear of reprisals, said, "At the moment we [bloggers] are fleeing in the wake of the arrest of Ko Nay Phone Latt."

Nay Phone Latt has a blog site www.nayphonelatt.blogspot.com, where he posted writings about expressions of the youth in Burma.

Another blogger said he believes the authorities have targeted bloggers and confirmed that fellow bloggers are on the run in fear of arrests.

Internet users in Rangoon said, over a few weeks ago, authorities have stepped up surveillance of internet users and asked internet café owners to maintain strict records of users.

Blogging, which is popular among Burmese youth, has become a dangerous pastime in the country. The authority's stranglehold over information flow remains as tight as ever and there is zero tolerance over any critical writing.

During the September protests, a Burmese blogger Thar Phyu, who has a blogsite www.mogokemedia.blogspot.com, was arrested and briefly detained for posting pictures of monks and people demonstrating on the streets.

Meanwhile, authorities have shifted poet Saya Saw Wai, who was arrested last week for writing a Valentines' day poem that contains a hidden word – 'Power Crazy Than Shwe', – to the notorious Insein prison on Saturday, family members said.

Chiang Mai, Thailand – Police in the former capital of Burma on Tuesday detained a dissident blogger.

Nay Phone Latt (Nay Bone Latt), a writer was picked up by police at a Rangoon internet café, friends told Mizzima. The reason for his detention is not yet clear.

In addition to being a blogger, Nay Phone Latt works for a private business company.

"I am a youth who is crazy about the arts", he wrote as a self introduction in one of his blogs.

Police searched houses in Thingyankyun and Thuwanna, where he used to live, this morning at about 10:00 a.m., according to a friend.

The blogger's aunt's residence was also raided by police.

Internet users in Burma told Mizzima that over the last few weeks authorities have increasingly monitored online activities.

Where Is Detained Chinese Journalist?

The World Association of Newspapers and World Editors have called on Chinese authorities to reveal the whereabouts of and release journalist Hu Jia, who has been held at a secret location since his arrest last month, apparently for participating in a European parliamentary hearing.

In a lettter to Premier Wen Jiabao, the Paris-based WAN and the WEF said China should immediately release Mr Hu and all other jailed Chinese journalists under reforms it promised in its successful bid for the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.

Mr Hu, a journalist, blogger and human rights activist, has been detained at an unknown location since 27 December, reportedly charged with "subverting state authority." Mr Hu participated in a European parliamentary hearing in Brussels on 26 November 2007 on the human rights situation in China, and said: "It is very serious that the official promises are not being kept before the Games."

About 20 police officers were involved in the arrest, some remaining behind after he was taken away. Police disconnected the family’s internet and telephone service, possibly to prevent them from telling supporters about the arrest.

In its letter to Premier Wen, WAN and WEF cited China’s "Beijing Olympic Action Plan", which pledges the country to "follow international standards and criteria." The letter said China has failed to live up to that promise by continuing to jail journalists. According to reports, at least 30 journalists and 50 cyber-dissidents are currently held in Chinese prisons.

The letter said:

"We are writing on behalf of the World Association of Newspapers and the World Editors Forum, which represent 18,000 publications in 102 countries, to express our serious concern at the continued detention of journalist Hu Jia at a secret location almost one month after his arrest.

"According to reports, about 20 police officers arrested Mr Hu, a journalist, blogger and human rights activist, at his home in Beijing on 27 December 2007. Some of the officers reportedly remained at the house after Mr Hu had been taken away, disconnecting the Internet connection and phone line, possibly to prevent his wife, Zeng, who is also a human rights campaigner, from telling supporters what had happened. Mr Hu is reportedly charged with ’subverting state authority’ and is being held at an unknown location. Both Mr Hu and his wife had been under a form of house arrest since 18 May.

"Using his webcam, Mr Hu participated in a European parliamentary hearing in Brussels on 26 November 2007 on the human rights situation in China. At the hearing, he said: ’It is ironic that one of the people in charge of organising the Olympic Games is the head of the Bureau of Public Security, which is responsible for so many human rights violations. It is very serious that the official promises are not being kept before the games.’ "We respectfully remind you that the Organising Committee for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games issued the ’Beijing Olympic Action Plan’ in 2002, which laid out guiding principles and a series of promises as part of Beijing’s preparation to be the host city. Specifically the Plan promised: ’In the preparation for the Games, we will be open in every aspect to the rest of the country and the whole world. We will draw on the successful experience of others and follow the international standards and criteria.’

"In accordance with this pledge and numerous international conventions, declarations and agreements - including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - we call upon the Chinese authorities to free all jailed journalists and bloggers ahead of the Olympics Games. According to reports, at least 30 journalists and 50 cyber-dissidents are currently held in Chinese prisons.

"We respectfully call on you to take all necessary steps to ensure that Mr Hu and all other journalists and others detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression are immediately released from prison and that charges against them are dropped."

Fouad al-Farhan, a father of two, is sometimes called “the Dean of the Saudi bloggers.” He is one of the few bloggers in Saudi Arabia willing to risk writing under his own name. Most of his writing focuses on cultural issues, and his blog’s tagline reads “Searching for freedom, dignity, justice, equality, public participation, and all the rest of the lost Islamic values.”

But when Fouad questioned the imprisonment of a group of academics and other Saudis who had planned to form a civil rights organization, the Interior Ministry asking him to sign an apology for questioning the Kingdom’s policy. He refused on principle. Within weeks, he was arrested without charge and taken in for “questioning.”

This is about more than Fouad’s case, more even than Saudi Arabia. It’s about the emergence of a vital and honest public sphere in the whole region and around the world. Other governments are watching closely; if the Saudi regime ends Fouad’s blogging career without repercussions, they won’t hesitate to crack down on dissident bloggers in their own countries.

The spring is coming while many Iranian students are still behind the bars. Here is the names of some of them,

In the past month and half, many students from different cities and universities have been arrested, on charges related to holding peaceful ceremonies for the celebration of the 7th of November, the National Day for Students. They have been behind the bars since. During these days, their families have not been able to visit them and only some of them have been given the chance to have short phone calls with the inmates. This has caused a lot of anxiety and tension for the families and has resulted in their many protests in order to pressure the government to release the students, to no avail.

We honor the freedom-loving students of Iran, some of whom are also bloggers, and thus on January 30th we rename our blogs to “Bloggers’ Solidarity with Imprisoned Iranian Students”.

Free Fouad: Arab Bloggers Speak Up!

The dean of Saudi bloggers Fouad Al Farhan (Ar) is still being detained - a month after he was handcuffed from his office in Jeddah and taken to an undisclosed location. Bloggers from Saudi Arabia to Tunisia are rallying behind Al Farhan and calling for his immediate release.

Tunisia:

For Tunisian activist Sami ben Gharbia, the entire Arab world seems to be a prison, where words and those uttering them are buried. He explains:

لماذا؟ قد يتسائل البعض. و ما دخل مدون سعودي في قضية تخص فضاء التدوين التونسي؟ السبب بسيط قد يكمن في أن قضية فؤاد تختزل لوحدها مأساة و رسالة التدوين في هذا العالم العربي الذي بات سجنا كبيرا تـُقبر فيه الكلمة الطيبة و من تلفظ بها. لماذا ندون و لماذا ندافع عن هذا الفضاء الذي أعطانا ما لم تعطه لنا أوطاننا و أهدانا ما يعمل ولاة أمرنا، بجبروتهم و عساكرهم و وشاتهم و خزينة دولة كان أولى بها أن تخدمنا، على مصادرته؟ لأننا كما كتب فؤاد و عدد "نرفض عقلية القطيع".

Some of you may be asking why? And what is the relationship between a Saudi blogger and the Tunisian blogosphere? The answer is simple and it is because Fouad's case contains in itself the misery and message of blogging in the Arab world, which has today become a large prison where words and those who utter them are buried. Why do we blog and why do we defend this cyberspace which has given us more than our nations and more than what our rulers - with their tyranny, armies and treasury, which should serve us - are taking away from us? It is, as Fouad had written, because we refuse the herd mentality.

Ben Gharbia also urges bloggers to stand by Al Farhan, by publishing his plight. He says:

من أجل فؤاد و من أجل المبادئ النبيلة التي يحملها… أدعو الإخوة المدونين التونسيين و العرب إلى نشر قضية فؤاد و الدفاع عن

For the sake of Fouad and for the values he believes in, I urge Arab and Tunisian bloggers to write about Fouad's case and continue to defend him.

Saudi Arabia:

From Saudi Arabia, where the issue is closer to blogger's hearts and freedom, 7ala Bezyadah calls upon fellow bloggers to recognise Al Farhan's efforts in blogging and demand his immediate release. He writes:

أعتقد أن التدوين الآن أصبح ذو تأثير قوي على الساحة السعودية… وفؤاد الفرحان قد أجبر من قبل لكي يتم إيقاف مدونته وأيضاً إيقاف مشروعه لدعم مدوني السعودية بواسطة إنشاء "رابطة مدوني السعودية"… ولم يستطع فؤاد الإبتعاد عن التدوين كثيراً فعاد بروح جديدة وقوية… والآن نقرأ عن خبر إعتقاله… ولا ندري ما هي المسببات لهذا الإعتقال حتى الآن…
وواجبنا الآن هو أن نقف وقفة صادقة مع من فتح الباب لنا وضحى بوقته وجهده وماله ونفسه من أجل توسيع نطاق الحرية لنا كمدونين سعوديين بأن نبدأ بالمطالبة بإطلاق سراحه وأن نكون نحن مدوني السعودية أول من يطالب بذلك فلنا في فؤاد الكثير فهو ينتمي لنا وننتمي له… ومن حقه علينا أن لا نخذله بأي شكل من الأشكال… فلنبدأ بالمطالبة اليوم قبل أن نندم على تأخرنا…

I believe that blogging is becoming a powerful tool in Saudi Arabia.. and Fouad Al Farhan was forced previously to stop his blog and also to stop his project to promote blogging by setting up the Saudi Bloggers Association.. Fouad wasn't able to remain away from blogging for long, and returned in new spirits and stronger than before.. and now we read about his arrest ..We still don't know why he was arrested and our duty now is to stand by the person who had sacrificed his efforts and money in order to expand the ceiling of our freedom as Saudi bloggers. We have to start by calling for his release and we as Saudi bloggers should be the first to seek that..There is a lot Fouad wants to give us and there is a lot we hope for him.. He has the right that we don't let him down in anyway. So let's start by demanding his release today before we start regretting it.

Ftat Al Amal (The Girl of Hope) admits that she doesn't blog all that comes to her mind because she does not want to end up where Al Farhan is today. She explains:

أصبح التدوين هو المتنفس الوحيد تقريباً .. الذي يعبر فيه الشباب عن آراهم انتقاداتهم وأحلامهم ..
عندما يصبح هذا المتنفس مراقباً ..هنا نضع يدنا على قلوبنا ..عندما اعتقل فؤاد الفرحان ..تخيلت نفسي مكانه ..فسجن المدونين لم يعد يقتصر الآن على الدول العربية كمصر مثلاً الذي اعتقل فيها عدد لا بأس من المدونين .. أما أن يصل الأمر إلى الدول الخليجية التي حرية التعبير فيها تكاد مسموحة للجميع خيرهم وشرهم ..فهي رسالة للمدونين بأن أفكاركم مراقبة ..
الكثير من المدونين لا يريدون شراً باوطانهم .. بل جل ما يعبرون عنه هي نقاط يجب أن تقرأ بعناية من المسؤولين لأنها تصدر من أناس أغلبهم يحملون درجات عليا من العلم والمعرفة .. ولا يعيبهم أنهم شباب وصغار في السن ..
انا عن نفسي لا أخفيكم لدي الكثير من الآراء التي لا تروق للجميع ..وأراء سياسية ..ولا أخفيكم لا اتطرق للسياسة في مدونتي خوفاً من المصير الذي آل له فؤاد الفرحان ..
قد يتهمني البعض بالجبن ..ولكن أنا لا أفكر بنفسي بقدر ما أفكر في عائلتي ..ولا أقول هنا أن فؤاد لا يفكر بعائلته ..بل بالعكس..لأنه يفكر بعائلته يريد لوطنه الأفضل..

Blogging has almost become our only outlet.. which enables youth to express their opinions, criticisms and dreams. When this outlet becomes monitored, we put our hands on our hearts. When Fouad Al Farhan was arrested, I imagined myself in his place. Jailing bloggers isn't restricted to Arab countries like Egypt, for instance, which has jailed a sizable number of bloggers. For an Arab Gulf country, where expressing one's idea is possible for the good and the bad, is a message for bloggers that their ideas are being watched. Many bloggers don't want to harm their countries. In fact, most of them express opinions which should be considered by officials because they are suggested by educated people. It isn't their fault that they are youthful and young in age. I personally have a lot of ideas which I don't think would be accepted by everyone. I have political ideas and I won't deny that I don't blog about politics because I don't want to face Fouad Al Farhan's destiny. Some of you may accuse me of being a coward…but I don't think of myself as much as I think of my family. I am not saying here that Fouad did not consider his family. On the contrary, because he thinks of his family, he wanted the best for his nation.

Talal, a Saudi blogger who lives in the US, warns us about how vulnerable societies built on hypocrisy are, saying Al Farhan's arrest was a mistake. He further adds:

فجعت كما غيري بخبر اعتقال المدون فؤاد الفرحان -عجل الله فرجه-.
وأرى أن للقضية بعدين أو وجهين مترابطين، فالأول هو البعد الإنساني والمتمثل في إعتقال رجل وإبعاده عن زوجته وأبناءه وما يترتب على ذلك من أحزان ومآسي. أما البعد الآخر وهو الأشد مرارة أن سبب الاعتقال كان ضد حرية رأي لم يمس فيها دين أو عرض أو يصرح فيها بعصيان أمني!
هل تريد السلطات من الشعب أن يكون منافقا يظهر عكس ما يبطن، ويهز رأسه مبتسما وقلبه حانق غضبان؟ إن هذا لهو عين الخطأ وبعدٌ عن الفقه والكياسة.
إن المجتمعات المنافقة هي مجتمعات هشّة قد نخرها الدود، فهي إذا معرضة للسقوط أمام أي هزة خارجية كانت أو داخلية. وإن في قصص باقي الدول لعبرة. لعل آخرها وليس أخيرها ما حدث لدولة العراق وكيف أنها انهارت في زمن قياسي بسبب كبت حريات شعبها وقمعهم.

Like others, I was shocked when I heard that Al Farhan was arrested. I see that his case has two dimensions, which are inter-related. The first is the humane angle which is represented in arresting a man and separating him from his wife and children and all the feelings of sadness and misery attached with that. The other dimension, which is more difficult, is that he was arrested for expressing his freedom of speech. He did not write against religion, or other people or call for civil disobedience! Do the authorities want people to become hypocrites and show the opposite of how they feel? Do they want them to smile outwardly when they are boiling of anger inside? This is a grave mistake. Societies built on hypocrisy are weak and would not be able to withstand the slightest rattle, whether it be from the inside or abroad. There is a moral in the stories of other countries for us, the most recent thought not the last is what happened to Iraq, which collapsed in a record time because its people's freedom was repressed and they were oppressed.

Jordan:

To protest Al Farhan's arrest hundreds of bloggers around the world posted the above banner on their sites. Jordanian Naseem Al Tarawnah writes about how the jailed blogger's ordeal is all about breaking the silence.

Blogger's Times:

Meanwhile, Blogger's Times calls for support for other jailed bloggers, including Egyptian Ahmad Mohsin, whose arrest they say "wasn't covered enough."

Blogger Mary Joyce called for a Silent blog day on January 6, where bloggers would stop blogging in protest against the arrest of Saudi blogger Fouad Ahmed Al Farhan. Other bloggers have also launched an international petition calling for his release. I call upon you to consider the day as being in protest against the arrest of blogger Ahmed Mohsin too, whose arrest did not grab the attention of many bloggers even though he was arrested because of his blogging activities. He was also the one who exposed the torture of Mohammad Gomaa adDahshouri, Al Fayoum's latest victim, and it was he who called the media and asked them to cover the case. He was also able, through his relationship with the Egyptians Against Torture Movement, to organise a Press conference at the lawyer's union headquarters in Cairo, for the victim's family which exposed the blackmail the family has been through to drop the case.

Egypt:

Egyptian blogger Abdulmonem Mahmood, who wrote the previous article, also commented on Farhan's arrest here. He writes:

يشكل القمع والاضطهاد الذي يعانيه المواطن العربي في بلادنا صورة نمطية نراها في هذا الوطن من أقصاه إلي أقصاه , فالاستبداد عملة واحدة وسوط الجلاد لا تختلف وطأته علي الضحية إن كان من مصر أو السعودية أو تونس أو ليبيا أو سورياومحاولات النظم المستبدة لتكبيل الحريات العامة والخاصة لا تقف عند حد معين بل ويتفنن كل مستبد وطاغية في كبته بطريقته الخاصةولم تعد هذه النظم المستبدة تقف أمام الصحافة المستقلة التي تكشف استبدادها فحسب بل صارت تتبع كل مواطن يستطيع أن يعبر بطريقته الخاصة عما يعانيه من ظلم في بلاده وهو ما حدث مؤخرا باعتقال المدون السعودي فؤاد أحمد الفرحان وسبقه من مصر المدون أحمد محسن ومحاولات تشويه المدون وائل عباس واستدعاء مدونين مصريين بشكل دوري لمقارات أمن لمباحث أمن الدولة أو خطفهم من بيوتهم لممارسة أخس أنواع التهديد حتي يتوقفوا عن هذا البعبع الذي يفضحهم ليل نهار وهو التدوين والنشاط الإلكتروني علي مواقع مجانية مثل اليوتيوب والفيس بوك أيضا هذا خلافا لممارسات نظم مثل سوريا وتونس من حجب لمدونات النشطاء علي الإنترنت وحرمان شعوبهم من استخدام محركات البحث وذلك من أجل حصار المعلومة وتضييق مساحة نشرها

The image of oppression suffered by Arabs is repeating itself across the Arab world. Oppression and the whip of the tormentor are faces of the same coin and their impact is not different on victims, whether in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Libya or Syria. The attempts of tyrants to control general and personal freedoms do not stop at a certain limit and every tyrant develops his own techniques to stifle freedoms. Such regimes are no longer limited to controlling independent newspapers which expose their suppression but are now chasing after every citizen who is able to express himself in his own way and speak out against this injustices he is suffering from. This is what has recently happened to blogger Fouad Al Farhan, who has been arrested. Egypt too arrested Ahmed Mohsin before that and attempted to tarnish the reputation of blogger Wael Abbas. It also routinely summons bloggers to the criminal investigations headquarters or kidnaps them from their home to threaten them to stop this monster which is exposing them day and night - blogging and online activism on free hosting services such as YouTube and Facebook. In addition some regimes like in Syria and Tunisia ban the websites of activists and deny their people the use of search engines, in their bid to decrease their access to information and lessen the chances of having it republished.

Mahmood, a Muslim Brotherhood blogger, was himself jailed for his blogging last year!

Supporters have set up a Free Fouad site here and they are appealing to bloggers to show support to Al Farhan by linking the following badge to their blogs.

Petition Hu Jintao for Hao Wu’s immediate release

Many friends and supporters of Hao Wu have asked what they can do to hasten our friend’s release. Hundreds of you have put badges on your blogs and webpages to call attention to Hao Wu’s detention, and this support has helped generate media interest in the situation.

We’d hoped that media pressure would lead to Hu Jintao to release Hao prior to his upcoming meeting with President Bush. Unfortunately, this looks increasingly unlikely. So today we’re launching a letter-writing campaign and a petition to ask for Hao’s immediate release.

Rebecca launched the letter writing campaign earlier today, and we’re encouraging readers to write to their national governments, to the Chinese Ambassadors in their nation, to their local newspapers, and to Chinese President Hu Jintao. Her post offers key pieces of information to include in letters or op-eds as well some useful addresses.

We’ve also launched an online petition, demanding that President Hu Jintao release Hao immediately. The text of the petition reads:

We, the undersigned concerned citizens of the world, protest the detention without charge of Chinese filmmaker and blogger Wu Hao and call on the Chinese government to release him immediately.

Mr. Wu, a Chinese citizen and U.S. permanent resident alien known in the United States as “Hao Wu”, recently returned to live in China and produce independent documentaries. He was detained on February 22nd without being charged with any crime. Authorities have not given Wu Hao’s family an explanation for the detention despite numerous inquiries. According to China’s own Code of Criminal Procedure, a person cannot be held without charge or arrest for more than 37 days. His detention has substantially exceeded that period of time.

It is our understanding, based on speeches by China’s own leaders, that China aims to be a country governed by the rule of law. The detention of Mr. Wu without charge, and without access to a lawyer, would appear to be highly inconsistent with that aim.

If Mr. Wu has indeed broken the law, a country that respects the rule of law should uphold Mr. Wu’s right to legal procedure. His continued unlawful detention is a clear violation of his universally recognized human rights. We ask for his immediate release.

We’d ask anyone reading this post to please sign the petition and pass the URL onto friends who might be inclined to sign it as well. Your email address is required to sign the petition, but it won’t be published. Letter writing campaign for Hao Wu

Many people have been asking what they can do to help speed Hao Wu’s release. We were hoping that the Chinese government might release Hao before Chinese President Hu Jintao’s U.S. trip next week. However it’s becoming clear that won’t happen, and thus we are asking you to help call attention to Hao’s plight by writing letters calling for his release. Please note the following:

Hao Wu (surname Wu) was detained on February 22^nd
Hao has not been charged with any crime.
He has not been formally arrested.
He has not been given access to a lawyer.
Authorities will not give any information about his location to the family.
According to China’s own Code of Criminal Procedure, a person cannot be held without charge or arrest for more than 37 days. His detention has well exceeded that period of time.
Please note in communications to U.S. media and politicians that Hao is a U.S. permanent resident.

Bloggers protest against crackdown

A big campaign has been organized by Iranian bloggers to protest against the recent arrests and the violent crackdown on the Internet.

A big number of them have decided not only to copy the news from banned websites into their own blogs, but even to symbolically change the name of their blogs to "Emrooz", the banned website which still operates, on Monday.

Hundreds of Iranian bloggers have announced their support for the protest and the number is growing rapidly. However, the protest needs some publicity by Western media to be enough effective.

Update:

- Persian media have picked up the news with great interest: BBC Persian, Radio Farda, Iran Newspaper (in Tehran), etc.

- Abtahi, the blogger vice-president, has supported the protest in a new post titled "Emrooz" and has said that Mostafa Tajzadeh, the top reformist politician behind Emrooz website, is totally impressed by the wide-spread support of the Persian blogosphere.

- Ignasio has gathered a rather big list of participating blogs with quotes from them in Persian.

- Mostafa Tajzadeh, the man in charge of Emrooz, has thanked all who participated in the protest. I'll try to summerize it later in a separate post.

- Initial reaction by the hardline conservatives appeared in Jomhouri-e Eslami, the radical newsppaer as a personal attack to me, which, in Iran, is seen as a symbol of honor and many respected intellectuals and political activists have recieved it.

"Google-bombing for Alaa" as a Test Case in Web 2.0 Activism

I know we have hardly begun this campaign, but it's never too early to sit back an take stock. G-B4A is pioneering ways to use new media/Web 2.o for the purposes of political activism. Let's take a look at the tools we've used and how we've used them.

1. e-mail/online collaboration - this is pretty basic (hardly Web 2.0) but it nevertheless allowed three people in different countries (Morocco, Bahrain, Lebanon) to collaborate and launch a project. Total time from proposition of idea to completion of Free Alaa website - 24 hours. Online collaboration allowed a global division of labor. A man in Holland made a Flash animation. A group in Cambridge made a petition page. A man in Florida started a Wikipedia entry.

2. Blogger (the site) - By using a templated webpage service we able to create a professional-looking website in a few hours

3. bloggers (the people) - Google-bombing for Alaa rests on the fact that now millions of people have personal websites (their blogs). A few years ago, a google-bombing might not have worked very well because people did not have access to websites in order to insert links. Now every person with a blog is also a webmaster, capable of changing the face of the internet.

Blogger culture will also be key in the success of G-B4A (Google-bombing for Alaa) because blogger culture has a built-in method of idea dissemination. Bloggers read each other. It is not necessary to send an e-mail to every blogger asking him or her to post a google bomb. It is only necessary that a few high-traffic blogs post google bombs. Then these blogs will not only serve the cause by google-bombing, but will also publicize the campaign when other bloggers read the google bomb post.

3. Technorati - By asking bloggers to tag their Google bombs googlebombingforalaa Technorati acts as an ad-hoc aggregator for G-B4A posts.

4. wiki - a wiki was created to catalogue all the blog posts that include G-B4A's. Because it is a wiki, anyone can edit the page and add the URLs of new posts.

5. Google - I'm saving the most important for last. This campaign rests most critically on our ability to use the Google algorithm to manipulate the search engine's page ranking for our own purposes. Let's be honest with ourselves here. Even though we believe our action is for a good cause, it is an act of mischief or even vandalism (of Google's beautiful architecture, that is). It is quite possible that Google will find a way to block us. If so, we will have to find other methods. We are trailblazers here, finding new uses for new tools. As I said to Mustapha, this isn't only about the action , it is about the process.

Free Alaa Campaign

Alaa is a fellow blogger with a strong record in activism for free speech (also, alongside his wife Manal, winner of a special award by Reporters Without Borders). He was arrested by the Egyptian authorities for the sole “crime” of peacefully demonstrating.
