English:

We, the undersigned, petition Maroc Telecom and Vivendi Universal to repeal the censorship of the Internet and selected internet sites immediately and thereby restore democratic expression and freedom of speech that is fundamental to any civilized nation.

We demand that Maroc Telecom and Vivendi Universal immediately stop the current online censorship on YouTube and all other services being censored, which is a violation of the right to have free access to information. We believe that Maroc Telecom and Vivendi Universal are promoting censorship within the Moroccan society. This is in direct contradiction to their stated goal of "Knowledge Sharing" as mentioned in their Sustainable Development program documentation.

The block on YouTube and other internet services serves no one and is a shameful act perpetrated by the management of Maroc Telecom and Vivendi Universal.

Internet-providers and media-companies should strive towards a society where all citizens have equal access to the web and web-related services.

We, the undersigned, respectfully ask you to revoke the latest ban on YouTube in order to create an environment where Moroccan citizens and Internet-users have free and equal access to the Internet.

We believe that this censorship must stop immediately.

Appel à l’arrêt de la censure inappropriée imposée par Maroc Telecom et Vivendi Universal

Nous, soussignés, lançons cette pétition pour protester contre Maroc Telecom et Vivendi Universal, et leur demandons de lever immédiatement la censure de certains sites Internet, et ainsi de restaurer la démocratie et la liberté d’expression, valeurs fondamentales pour toute nation civilisée.

Nous demandons que Maroc Telecom et Vivendi Universal lèvent immédiatement la censure imposée sur le site de YouTube et différents autres services en ligne actuellement bloqués au Maroc, ce qui constitue une violation du droit au libre accès à l’information. Nous croyons que Maroc Telecom et Vivendi Universal sont ainsi en train de promouvoir la censure au sein de la société marocaine.

Ceci contredit leur propre objectif de « Partage des connaissances » mentionné dans leur programme de développement durable. Le blocage de YouTube et autres services Internet ne sert les intérêts de personne et constitue un acte honteux de la part de Maroc Telecom et Vivendi Universal.

Les fournisseurs d’accès Internet et les sociétés de média devraient œuvrer pour l’émergence d’une société où tous les citoyens ont le droit d’accès au Web et à tout service en ligne.

Nous, soussignés, vous demandons respectueusement de revenir sur la récente censure du site de YouTube afin de créer un environnement où les citoyens marocains et les internautes soient libres d’accéder à Internet.

Nous croyons que cette censure doit cesser immédiatement.

Morocco: Censorship Update

2006 was a rough year for Moroccan internet freedoms, with several sites being blocked; 2007 wasn't much better with sites that were previously open becoming only sporadically accessible.

Censorship of opposition voices from the Western Sahara also remains an issue, with many blogs from that region being blocked in the rest of Morocco. Freedom Writer quoted a recent MAP (Maghreb Arab Presse) article, while asvdh commented upon a Human Rights Watch article regarding freedom of expression in Western Sahara.

Although an article by AFP suggests that Moroccan bloggers have more freedom than those in other Arab and Muslim countries, the fact that Livejournal is still frequently inaccessible proves that there's still a ways to go. According to MoTIC, who keeps a tab at the top of his site, Google Maps and Google Earth remain blocked as well. A post by Matthew Helmke mentions other blocked sites such as OpenDNS, anonymizer.com, multiproxy.org, “and on occasion You Tube.”
